President of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design
Being the school president of DJCAD has been a whirlwind. I have gained so many valuable skills and met many wonderful people along the way. I originally took the role as I wanted to be more involved in the goings on of the school and have an impactful say in what happens. Throughout this past year that, and so much more has happened.
I felt, that after COVID, students had become more detached from their school. I hoped through this role I could try and bring people back together and help them care again. Through forming the DJCAD committee and raising awareness of the opportunities surrounding student representation I hope I have started to do this. I could not have made it through the presidency without the support of my committee. It is vital to have a solid support system to do this role.
I have enjoyed working with societies connected to DJCAD and trying to facilitate joint events. I hope the connection continues and joint events become bigger and better! It has been a period of, seemingly, endless emails and continuous meetings but through this, I have developed my organisation, confidence, and time management skills. The role is fundamental to the school as it allows clear communication and connection between staff and students.
My advice to someone who is thinking of doing the role is to TAKE A BREAK every now and then. It is fantastically rewarding but can be exhausting if you don’t allow yourself to chill out sometimes. However, it’s best just to embrace the chaos. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with many different people and attending a variety of meetings including the SRC, SSLC, SPF and ones with the associate dean for learning and teaching.
I have loved the freedom of the role. If I’ve had a sensible, idea for an event I have had free reign to make it happen. DJCAD’s Christmas market, in the first semester, is a good example of this. This was a labour of love for me. It required a lot of hard work, planning and paper chain making but ended up being a successful event. It allowed students to showcase their work in a safe environment and considering this was my first time planning a major event I think it went well, not to toot my own horn or anything.
DJCAD really supports its students and supplies many opportunities to prepare for life after university. You just have to put yourself out there and grab every opportunity available. So, if you’re thinking about applying to be president, working as part of the DUSA EXEC or just being a student rep. JUST DO IT!
