Nyasha Mutembwa

Nyasha also known as Ash, is known for the transformative impact she has brought to student life at the University. With a journey marked by dedication, growth, and a deeper connection with the student community, Ash is set to make her mark for the second time in a row as the president of DUSA.

From Student to Leader

Ash’s journey to the presidency has been nothing short of inspiring. Her leadership journey took a great plunge when she was elected as DUSA President in March 2022. With the high impact she has made during her term with utter dedication, she secured her place again for the academic year 2023/2024. This is the first time in 12 years that a DUSA President has returned for a second term in office!

A true embodiment of the student spirit, Ash’s journey through academia began in 2017 when she became a student at the University of Dundee. She has also played Basketball for the Dundee University Women’s First team since 2017 when she started University. Her strong connection with the institution and its community stems from years of active involvement in societies and sports clubs; from being President of the African-Caribbean Society for 2 years and sitting as VP and other committee positions in Women in STEM Society, Bollywood Dance Society and Civil Engineering Society. Before stepping into her current role, Ash pursued her studies in civil engineering which she graduated from in June 2023.

A Vision for the Future

Ash’s vision for the future is armed with her experience as a student, coupled with her year of presidency, she’s poised to take DUSA to new heights. Her enthusiasm to lead and serve is infectious, and her insights into the diverse needs of students are invaluable. Ash’s journey is a source of inspiration for fellow students, demonstrating that leadership knows no bounds when passion and dedication lead the way. Her commitment to fostering a sense of community, supporting student endeavours, and amplifying voices within the student body set a powerful precedent for leadership.

“I want to inspire more students to reach out for the amazing opportunities that are in front of them without hesitation. As president, I want to be that individual who plays a vital role in your experience while at university; be it from the last year or this coming year, or being a student who’s been here for both years! I believe I was elected to be here because the students believed in what I had to offer and they wanted someone who was different. I came into this position to lead change and to listen to the student voice, all the changes I aim to make this year are those pushed forward by the students who have contacted me and asked for support from me and my team. As a student who’s been here since 2017, I see what’s been possible and definitely have a vision for what we can do to surpass that, to make the campus an amazing space for ALL.” – says, Ash.

Her journey from a civil engineering student engaged in societies and sports clubs to a two-term president reflects the power of perseverance, vision, and an unwavering dedication to enhancing student life. The future is indeed bright under her guidance, and we can’t wait to witness the transformative journey she will lead us on. Feel free to reach out to her at president@dusa.co.uk
