IMPORTANT UPDATE – CHANGES TO YOUR SU

13 August 2025

Dear students,

We need to share some important and difficult news.

The University of Dundee has advised us that, due to its own financial difficulties, there will be a 34% reduction in funding to your Students’ Association this year.

We fully understand the need for the University to make savings in the current climate, and we are committed to playing our part in supporting its recovery. However, this cut is of such a scale that this is likely to mean venue closures, fewer events, reduction in society funding, and a further reduction in student opportunities. It will have a direct impact on your student experience and may threaten our ability to meet the needs of our members.

These cuts come after several challenging years for DUSA. Shortly after we emerged from the pandemic, we were informed of the discovery of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) in our main building. This meant the majority of our spaces had to close, severely limiting our ability to host events, provide community hubs and generate an income. At that time, the University assured us it would support us through the disruption and, as our landlord, provide suitable new spaces. It promised to build a new building for DUSA to enhance the student experience. This never materialised.

While work was carried out to make the full extent of The Liar safe to use again, the additional financial support previously promised has been withdrawn. Throughout these challenges, we have worked hard to adapt, cut costs, and find efficiencies while still delivering for students.

On top of these unresolved issues, the new funding reduction will place even greater strain on our ability to deliver for you. We know the Students’ Association plays a vital role in your university life – from providing spaces to build community, to hosting events, and offering student employment opportunities.

We have always been clear that we want to support the University through these challenges, and have asked to be factored into its financial planning. However, the University has not engaged in meaningful consultation with us over the scale of this cut or how best to mitigate its impact on students. We are deeply concerned that this decision will undermine the University’s own aspirations for a vibrant campus and a strong student community.

We know this news will be disappointing and worrying, particularly for those who rely on our spaces and services for connection, growth, and employment. Please know that we are working hard to create a plan that minimises the impact wherever possible. We will also continue to push for the University to reverse the funding cut and protect vital student services. This is not just about a building or a budget line – it is about your community.

We are committed to keeping you informed and will share updates openly and quickly. Your voice matters, and we will continue to advocate for your needs every step of the way.

From all of us at DUSA
