Freshers’ Week 2018 – Day 9 – Screen on the Green presents Dirty Grandpa
September 9 - 8:00 pm - 10:15 pm
There have been many attempts throughout the years to refresh the cinema experience, from true advances in technology such as Technicolor and Dolby Stereo to funny gimmicks such as smell-o-vision, temperature manipulation and 3D. Even the mighty IMAX experience has added immersion on an unparalleled scale – finding out that Gandalf wears contact lenses and a rubber nose is an eye opening experience you simply don’t get with normal cinema!
Drive-in cinema started in the US in 1933 and experienced huge popularity until the 1970s when it started to decline due to increasing land costs and the adoption of daylight saving time. However, more recently American drive-in cinemas have been experiencing a revival attributed to DIY movie buffs with access to more affordable equipment and a passion for cinema.
Here in Britain, modern outdoor cinema is something of a novelty, usually reserved for high-end, artsy film festivals or niche little setups with hot tubs on a London rooftop. Well in true Union style we took that nonsense and threw it right out the window by buying our own projectors and a massive 30 foot screen, inviting you to join us in enjoying some classic cinema on the Campus Green!
There’s no need to bring a car – we’ll provide the seating! – but make sure to wrap up warm as you will be outside! To help keep you nice and toasty we’ll also have a barbecue, so make sure to bring some money, maybe a blanket to chill out on, and just relax and enjoy the perfect way to close out your Freshers’ Week.
