Hello and welcome to your second Presidential update!
This past week my team and I have been hard at work breaking down the National Student Survey (NSS) results – which you will see on the 9th August – and organising the Student Representation Council (SRC) elections amongst many other things! Both your VPSA and VPCC have been enjoying a short break in the beautiful country of Greece having done so much work previously that their absence gave the rest of us time to catch up! Ezichi, your VPE, is also still living it up in America and I hope you will join me in wishing Ezichi and Sofia a Happy Birthday!
As for Ellen, your trusty VPA, she has been really delving into the NSS results and analysing what we can do with the University to improve every single aspect of your Student Experience. Ellen has also been hard at work conducting Academic Appeals, ensuring that you have the best possible chance to succeed here at the University of Dundee.
Caroline, your VPSW, has been getting staff and student input for our Black History Month campaign, which will be our biggest ever. She’s also been looking after your sexual health planning sex education week in September and keeping our free condom dispensers full.
Alex, your reliable VPR, has managed to finalise all the details for the SRC elections (NOMINATIONS OPEN SOON KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED). He has also been dealing with Disciplinaries here at DUSA, ensuring that students get the fairest treatment possible when things aren’t right at The Union.
Toni, your VPE, has been working together with your School Presidents to plan the best way to make sure every school fully engages with the fantastic employability event that she is planning for you.
So, that leaves one person – Me, your President. I have been in many interesting meetings representing students, something you will be hearing throughout the year! I had a particularly useful meeting with the Global Health Challenge about how DUSA can help them build on the fantastic work they done last year. I also had two great trips to Ninewells over the last week. Firstly Alex and I met with Rami Abboud the Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching for the School of Medicine. As the lead Representative for both Medicine and Nursing I have a fantastic opportunity to bring DUSA closer to both schools and our campuses at Ninewells and Kirkcaldy. We achieved much at our meeting and I enjoyed a tour of the fantastic research facilities at Ninewells which left me wishing that I had paid more attention in Higher Biology!
Finally, my other trip to Ninewells was with Ellen to finally award Blair Smith his Student Led Teaching Award. Blair went above and beyond what you would normally expect from a tutor and was the deserved winner of an SLTA. The recognition that you give our fantastic staff means the world to them, so please remember to thank your lecturers and tutors who go the extra mile. Also, remember how much it means to all our staff, from receptionists and janitors all the way through to councillors and gardeners, when you say thank you. A united staff and students will never be defeated in delivering the ultimate student experience.
Thank you for reading, I am away home to Greenock for the weekend but I hope you are somewhere much warmer and cannot wait for you all to come back soon.
