Housing Matters to Dundee Students
Dundee University Students Association has published a guide to housing in the city to be widely circulated in order to help members avoid some of the pitfalls associated with rented accommodation.

‘Housing Matters – a Students Guide to Housing in Dundee’ is a student-led publication which responds to requests for further information and in light of some problems reported by students.

An electronic survey by DUSA attracted 700 replies, with respondents answering questions on the condition and security of flats and the responsiveness of landlords to any problems their tenants had. The results have led to DUSA compiling a list of the Top 10 student-recommended landlords in Dundee.
DUSA President Andrew Smith said students are a key part of the housing market and should be treated as such.

“Through highlighting good practice we hope to raise the standards and provisions of all landlords in Dundee. If a landlord has failed to get on to our list then they know what they need to do- raise their standards.

“Later this year we will be publishing a standard model contract that we want students to put to their prospective landlords. We want to arm students with the resources and knowledge to assure that they get the best possible treatment from them.

“At a time when rent is only increasing and student numbers are going up then we need to ensure that we continue to challenge bad practices, highlight good practices and refuse to let an issue as important as housing be cast to one side.

“We will be updating the survey again next year and it’ll be interesting to see if the results stay the same.”
