Why join the Society?
Dundee Labour Students aim to provide a Labour Party voice on campus and offer undergraduates and postgraduates an opportunity to get involved with progressive politics at a local, Scottish and UK level. The society aspires to act as a platform for debate and is committed to campaigning for a better student experience. With a Tory led government in Westminster hell bent on ruining the life chances of young people across Britain, and an SNP majority government in Scotland cutting the education budget and threatening university mergers too, it's now more important than ever that students get involved and defend their life chances.
Labour has always been the party looking out for young people - we introduced minimum wage, EMA and Civil Partnerships. At the last Scottish Parliament (Holyrood) election we committed to keeping university FREE for Scottish domicile students, and subsequently promised to reduce the outrageous fees set by the Tories and SNP for students coming from the rest of the UK. But, we want to go further!
Labour Students are calling for the introduction of the Living Wage of £7.20 p/h. And in Dundee we're campaigning to bring the National Football Accademy to our city. With your help our campaigns will be stronger. You can join the society whatever year you're in, whatever subject you study. Society membership is completely free, and Labour Party membership is only £1 annually! Each semester we hold social and political events, often in conjunction with Abertay Labour Society. In the past these have included organising guest speakers, trips to Westminster and Holyrood and society nights out.
When are our meetings?
The society meets regularly to socialise and campaign. For the latest information on our meetings please check out our Facebook or follow us on Twitter (@DundeeLabStu). If you have any questions about the society you can also email us - dundeelabourstudents@hotmail.co.uk - and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
