ShakeShake is a brand-new club night specialising in the hip-swinging, vintage sounds of the 50s and 60s, lovingly selected by DUSA’s proud DJ veterans, Frank and Lindsay. As two of the faces behind the world famous Groucho’s Record Store (as recently featured in the video for The View’s ‘I Need That Record’, the official Record Store Day Anthem of 2011) this dynamic duo possess an unparalleled knowledge of bygone beats. One walk into Groucho’s Record Store reveals an entire world of vintage 45s, crackling 78s and dusty LPs from a time when popular music actually had soul (gone are the days, eh?).

Sin CitySin City is without a doubt the most popular student clubnight in Dundee on a Friday night. Launched earlier this year by Ice Dragon Promotions, who also put on nights in two of Dundee’s most stylish and popular venues, as well as running ICE, the longest running urban night in Scotland, Sin City attracted a colossal student following from the very beginning. Boasting an array of activities which stretch far beyond the parameters of your usual clubnight, Sin City offers an area for playing Wii and Playstation 3 games, an ice cream parlour, pre-bookable VIP tables, a £100 lottery and much, much more! Bookings already confirmed for semester one include Ministry of Sound’s chart-topping Cut Up Boys on 16th Sept, Trevor Nelson on 30th Sept, DJ Zed from Castle Club Aiya Napa, Fat Boy from ‘The Only Way Is Essex’, and plenty of more surpises in the pipeline. And as if all this wasn’t enough, Sin City is hosted each and every week by one of Scotland’s most revered and technically adept DJ’s on the urban mash-up circuit, the legendary DJ Aftershock. From launching its first night at DUSA back in January of this year, Sin City has spread like a virus across Scotland, with nights now operating in Perth, Glasgow and St. Andrews. So come on down and see what all the fuss is about, and to see where all the fun began. |

DistortedReturning for its third year as the Union’ most face-melting night; Distorted, most accurately described as a Molotov Cocktail of the heaviest metal, hardest rock and most trailblazing alternative is the only place you’ll want to be on a Friday night. Started in 2009 by students Andrew, Dale and Gary with the idea of hearing “more good music and none of that shit you hear every other night of the week” Distorted now rains a fiery rock storm in Floor 5 every fortnight! The programme alternates between its flagship ‘Distorted Metal, Rock & Alternative’ club night, a night that makes every other club you will ever attend look like a tea party at the local bridge club hosted by Barney the Dinosaur, and the monthly ‘Distorted LIVE!’ Dundee’s biggest regular Underground live music night that provides a platform for new talent from all reaches of Scotland.
So if you like the best modern Metal, the greatest classic Rock, the finest old school Punk or even the most cutting edge industrial, Distorted is the only night where playing Lamb of God, The Sex Pistols, Motörhead and The Prodigy in one place won’t result in massive damage to property. |

shaM-pUThose of you who already know us will be aware that we like a good mash-up at The Union. (By the way, for those that don’t know, strictly speaking a mash-up is the mixing of two or more songs to create a new track, however, the term is also used to refer to clubnights that have a wide and varied music policy.) In fact, one of the earliest stars of the modern mash-up era is Dundee University graduate and ex-Union DJ, Roy Kerr, better known to the bootleg community as the Freelance Hellraiser. His ‘Stroke of Genius’ (in name and nature) mash-up, which combined The Strokes and Christina Aguilera to great effect, was hugely influential on the then fledgling scene – and was possibly responsible for turning more people on to that scene than any bootleg mix before or after. |

Noughtie But NiceLove it or hate it, the music of the Noughties was inescapable, coming from adverts, video games and that newfangled gadget, the iPod. It was a decade in which the music business suffered near catastrophic collapse whilst music itself invaded every aspect of our lives. But it sometimes felt like there has been no centre of pop gravity, as though everything has migrated to an ever-expanding margin, where every taste is catered for. Arguably, the biggest phenomena have not been individual artists or thrilling new genres, but illegal downloading, the invention of the iPod and iTunes, the free music zones of YouTube, MySpace and Spotify and the democratisation of the means of production and distribution that allows any kid with a computer to become a legend in their own bedroom studio. |
